The Jazz Maui 2024 Maui Music Series Presents
“More Classics From The Blue Note Jazz Era”
With Steve Dubey And The Maui Jazz Elements
On Saturday, May 11, 2024
On Saturday, May 11, the Jazz Maui 2024 Maui Music Series presents “More Classics from the Blue Note Jazz Era” with trumpeter Steve Dubey and The Maui Jazz Elements featuring John Zangrando on sax and flute, Mark Johnstone on piano, Ian Sheridan on bass, and Paul Marchetti on drums, at the ProArts Playhouse, 1280 S. Kihei Road, in Kihei. The show begins at 7:30pm and tickets are available at www.ProArtsMaui.org.
The second in a series, this evening of music celebrates the classic period of Blue Note Records and commemorates the 85th founding of the company. The Blue Note record company released more than 1000 albums from 1949 to 1966, and 900 of them have been labeled”classics” in the history of American jazz music. Legendary jazz icons such as Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Cannonball Adderly, Hank Mobley, Ron Carter, Freddie Hubbard, Max Roach, Thelonious Monk and many more were recorded and their music preserved by Blue Note for future jazz lovers. The May 11th concert is an homage to the legacy of the artists who created the Blue Note sound and shaped this unique American tradition.
Trumpeter Steve Dubey has been an active member of the music community on the island of Kauai for the last three decades. He has appeared with many resident and visiting artists such as Michael Ruff, Lao Tizer, Tierney Sutton, Gabriel Espinosa, Taj Mahal, Howard Levy (of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones), and others. He has been a pillar in Kauai's premier latin jazz/salsa ensemble Rumba De Fuego. More recently, he has appeared as a guest artist with Maui's own Angela and Phil Benoit, both on Maui and their West Coast tours.
John Zangrando, or “Johnny Z,” came to Maui in 1980 from New York and has been one of the busiest sax players on the island since. He has played or recorded with George Benson, John Mayall, Michael McDonald, Dionne Warwick, and Gladys Knight. He has also played with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Danny Gottlieb and Mark Egan of Elements and was musical director for singer Jon Hendricks for his Hawaii tour. Johnny Z plays tenor, alto, soprano, baritone and bass saxophones, as well as flute, piccolo, bass clarinet and electronic wind instrument (EWI).
Multi-instrumentalist Mark Johnstone is best known for his keyboard work with the Grammy-nominated Mick Fleetwood Blues Band and The Island Rumors Band. He can also be found in a variety of settings as a soloist or sideman, displaying skills on keys, guitar, harmonica and vocals. While working and touring with Mick Fleetwood he shared the stage with many accomplished artists such as Carlos Santana, Willie Nelson, John Mayall, Michael MacDonald, Alice Cooper, Steven Tyler, Dave Mason, Pat Simmons, Sammy Hagar and many more.
Ian Sheridan is a professional bassist, producer, and mixing engineer. Ian has performed and recorded with many artists including multiple Grammy winner Jason Mraz. Ian has produced and engineered many songs and albums that have received national radio airplay, charting, and commercial and media placement.
Well known on Maui, Paul Marchetti studied drums and percussion in New York and has performed and recorded with artists such as Mick Fleetwood, Eric Marienthal, Walter Becker, Michael McDonald, Michael Buble and many more. He started his career in 1973, touring and recording with Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary. Marchetti has appeared on national and local television shows and recorded and toured with an international list of artists.

SAVE THE MUSICIANS
Jazz Maui is supporting local musicians. You can, too, when you click on the Donate button.
Your contributions support Maui musicians who have lost their livelihood and just about everything else due to the recent fires. By organizing events at various venues around the island, Jazz Maui is creating paying jobs for these out-of-work musicians. Your donations also support Jazz Maui and these performers in providing music as therapy for traumatized residents, many of whom are sheltered in temporary housing.
All funds raised directly support local musicians.
