Violinist Duane Padilla

Workshop with Violinist
Duane Padilla

July 30, 4:30pm – 5:30pm
McCoy Studio Theater

Registration is mandatory.

Violinist Duane Padilla will offer a version of the 1 hour workshop he presented at the American String Teachers Association National Conference that was featured in Strings Magazine.

It’s a hands on, interactive exploration of the history of Hawaiian music that takes students on a journey from the pre-European contact music, to ki ho alu/slack key guitar, to hymn song from the missionaries and takes a detour to the forgotten Hawaiian string band tradition of the late 19th and early 20th century that featured violin.

No preparation of students necessary. They will be playing the entire time and Duane will teach everything from scratch. All audience members are invited to bring an instrument and participate.

The hour session will culminate in a collaborative jam session on Hi’ilawe, a piece composed by Sam Lia, a Hawaiian fiddler based on big island in the early 1900’s and made famous by slack key guitarist Gabby Pahinui.

In the the process of learning the song, both observers and participants will discover the historical roots of what makes Hawaiian music sound Hawaiian.

REGISTRATION CLOSED

PLEASE NOTE: Due to complications from COVID-19, the Quartet for this concert will include cellist Alex Greenbaum performing in place of Joshua Nakazawa. And violinist Mann-Wen Lo will not be performing in the concert. The evening's guest artist, violinist Kisa Uradomo will perform in her place. The Dvorak piece will be performed in place of the originally scheduled Brahms' epic String Quintet No. 2 Op 111.

Paul January

Paul JanuaryPaul January got his first paying gig when he was 11 years old, playing piano for a children’s fashion show in Denver, Colorado. By 1972 he was attending music school, teaching piano and trumpet, and working every weekend, and when his former piano teacher said, “Let’s move to Vegas and play in the orchestras!” he was all in. By 1974 he realized that he couldn’t take the heat (literally as well as figuratively) and found a much more temperate climate and much nicer people in the Reno area, with still plenty of work in the field of music. He spent the next 46 years playing in various spots around Reno and Tahoe, as a single performer playing jazz, standards, and pop, or with groups as large as 17 playing everything from funk to big band jazz. He has had the privilege of working with some of the biggest names ever to grace the stages of Reno and Las Vegas, and has made many friends along the way. But when a global pandemic (we’re looking at you, COVID!) closes down your gig, what to do? The only logical answer is “Retire and move to Hawaii.”

Now Paul and his family live in Lahaina, Maui. Most of his time is spent homeschooling their 8-year-old grandson, offering advice to the adult daughters, or renovating their home, but in his spare time, he looks forward to sharing his music with the island of Maui.

Tom Stryker

Tom StrykerTom received his first harmonica at the age of 15 in San Francisco as a Christmas gift.  It was then he engaged former “Harmonica Rascal” Ray Tankersley to teach him to play.

Tom played lead with the “Harmonica Express,” and the world famous “Johnny Puleo Harmonica Gang.”.  Tom then went on to perform around the world on his own, also performing with the Harmonica Aces on Holland America Cruises Lines to South America.  He is continues to perform as a soloist in Asia including China.  Tom also performs in the Reno area clubs/restaurants and at Jazz Festivals along with Jazz Bands and Symphonies worldwide..

Tom recently recorded a CD Album, “EastCollaboration” with the great Tony Luisi.

A strong supporter of the harmonica movement, Tom joined “SPAH,” The Society For The Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica in 1980.  He was President of SPAH from 2006 to 2012  with members worldwide.
