JAZZ MAUI 2015 PRESENTS THE ARTURO O’FARRILL JAZZ SEXTET
Arturo O’Farrill, pianist, composer and educator received his third Grammy Award in 2015. When it comes to Latin jazz, Arturo O’Farrill ranks as the modern king of the genre. Trumpeter Jim Seeley has performed with Ray Charles, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and Maynard Ferguson, and has been a long standing member and featured soloist with the Chico O’Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra. The University of Texas Arlington faculty jazz sextet will open the show. There is a pre show courtyard performance by Na Ali`i Big Band (students from King Kekaulike HS on Maui).
Tickets: $35, $45; Sponsored by the Arts Education for Children Group, Hawaii Tourism Authority, and Makana Aloha Foundation with artist booking by Dancin Dave Productions; Master class workshops during the day of the concert require a separate ticket for entry. $20.
The UT Arlington Department of Music is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) with a world-renowned faculty and approximately 325 graduate and undergraduate students. It offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in jazz performance. The Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies degree is a robust music degree combined with significant coursework in jazz studies. The Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies is designed to prepare students for professional work in the ever-growing jazz and commercial music areas or for successful audition into graduate school.
The concert is part of a week-long series of workshops and concerts presented by Jazz Maui including:
Monday & Tuesday, June 29 & 30 – Jazz Camp with the University of Texas (UT) at Arlington Jazz Faculty, King Kekaulike High School, 121 Kula Highway, Pukalani, 4-6pm daily
Beginning/ intermediate level clinics geared toward middle and high school jazz musicians. First hour focus is on big band styles, rehearsal techniques, and sight-reading. Second hour focus is on beginning/ intermediate solo techniques, including improvisation over basic chord progressions, scale studies, and practice techniques. $50 for both days; assistance available Register HERE

Beginning, intermediate and advanced classes with internationally renowned professionals.

Beginning/ intermediate level clinic geared toward middle and high school jazz musicians. Focus includes basic jazz styles, articulation, and solo techniques, including improvisation over basic chord progressions, scale studies, and practice techniques. $20, Register HERE

Advanced clinic geared toward experienced musicians. Focus is on approaches to practice and advanced improvisation, including advanced chord progressions and substitutions, chord changes, and re-harmonization. $20, Register HERE

Advanced clinic geared toward experienced musicians, composers, arrangers, and educators. Focus includes composition, arranging, Latin rhythms, and Afro-Latin, Afro-Cuban, and Pan-American styles and pedagogy. $20, Register HERE

Dave Glenn was Director of Jazz Studies and professor of low brass at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington from 1989 until his retirement in 2011. He received a Bachelor of Music in trombone performance from North Texas State University and a Master of Music in composition from the University of Northern Colorado.
Dave spent eleven years as a professional trombonist in New York City and while there, played for ten years with the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band and toured extensively with Bill Watrous’ Manhattan Wildlife Refuge, Diana Ross, and Lou Rawls. He also subbed on tours with Chuck Mangione, Blood, Sweat and Tears, and the Mel Lewis Orchestra and was on the Grammy Award winning recording Walk on the Water by the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band.
Dave has also recorded two jazz CDs of his original compositions and arrangements, Journeys and National Pastime (released in June 2009). He has composed five commissioned works for orchestra, the latest being “Romantic Fantasy on Themes by Mozart” for the Walla Walla Symphony in 2015, and numerous chamber works including “Fireflies,” the title piece of a CD by the Free Range Saxophone Quartet (Origin Classical Records) and “Sculpture Garden for Piano Quintet,” commissioned by the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival.
Dave Glenn is an endorsing artist for Conn/Selmer, a member of the American Composers Forum, and an Origin Records recording artist.

Prior to settling in Hawai’i, Shari Lynn attended the Pasadena Playhouse, sang with George Shearing and led her own band, touring twenty eight states for seven years. Since settling in Hawaii in 1976, she has successfully continued her career as a professional singer and actress. She’s headlined in concerts with the Honolulu Symphony, and was the “girl singer” with the Del Courtney orchestra. She’s had regular gigs in major hotel showrooms and lounges such as the Royal Hawaiian’s Monarch Room with The Brothers Cazimero, the Kahala Hilton’s Maile Room with Kit Samson, and the Sheraton’s Hanohano Room with her own band, Fascinatin’ Rhythm, which also had a ten-year run at the Hale Koa Hotel.

Valery Ponomarev worked with Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers for 4 years. With the Messengers, he performed at major concert halls, clubs, and festivals all over the world and recorded eleven record albums. He also made numerous television appearances with the Messengers in Europe, Japan, and Brazil. In the United States he has made television appearances on “To Tell The Truth,” on the PBS network, National Geographic Today, and CNN. He performed at the Clifford Brown Memorial Concert in Wilmington, Delaware, 1991, which featured the music of the legendary Max Roach/Clifford Brown Quintet with Max Roach (leader) on drums, Harold Land, tenor sax, George Morrow, bass, Sam Dockery, piano, and Valery Ponomarev, trumpet.
